Baroque Splendour
Visiting Dresden's Historic Quarter (the Altstadt or Old City) for the first time, it is hard not to be taken aback by the monumental scale of its palaces and churches. Destroyed in 1945 by bombing, its reconstruction has marked one of the century's most impressive efforts of its kind. The Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) has been completely restored, becoming not only an iconic building of the city, but also a symbol of its rebirth.
Dresden is also filled with gems of the German Baroque Period, such as the Semper Opera House and the Zwinger Palace. This palace houses the amazing Gallery of Art of the Old Masters, whose biggest treasure is Rafael's Madonna Sixtina, the artist's crowning masterpiece and possibly the most famous pair of angels in the entire history of art.
As well as being a city of art and culture, Dresden is renowned for its inventions. The cable car, the coffee filter, milk chocolate, coasters and artificial mineral water were all conceived in this city, and Dresden takes pride in what it has given the world. Take a tour, and see if you start to feel inspired. The Pleasures of Dresden
The Elba River and the city combine to create landscapes of rare beauty, where you’ll want to spend some time. Within the city, the river also forms a natural boundary between the former Dresden City Centre and the Neustadt (New City), with its concentration of avant-garde shops, lively pubs and restaurants, where you can savour the fine quality of the city's beer and traditional cuisine.
