Historic monuments in Ancona

• Ancona Cathedral: Standing on the Guasco hill overlooking the city's port, the cathedral offers amazing views of Ancona and the Adriatic coast; the wooden roof from the 11th century Cathedral is actually in the shape of an upside-down boat and its most obvious feature is the 12-sided cupola  
• Arch of Trajan: 18 m high, this arch was erected in 1140/1150 as an entrance to the causeway atop the harbor wall in honor of the emperor who had made the harbor, it is one of the finest Roman monuments in the Marche  
• The Lazzaretto: Designed by architect Luigi Vanvitelli in 1732 this pentagonal building covers more than 20,000 m² and was built to protect the military defense authorities from the risk of contagious diseases which eventually reached the town  
• Episcopal palace: From the Baroque period (18C), which stands on the Obispo square, opens on to a stunning doorway covered in grey and red marble with Corinthian columns and projecting entablatures
