Historic monuments in Almeria

• Alcazaba: A 10th century Arab fortress and one of the greatest forts in Andalucía, from its ideal location at the top of the hill, the Alcazaba overlooks Almería and the bay; the fortress was built in the 10th century to defend the town  
• Plaza del Cristo de la Buena Muerte: The Church of San Juan is located in the Plaza del Cristo de la Buena Muerte, in the heart of the old medina, and in it you can see remnants of ancient Arab Mosque of Almeria, with twelfth-century Almohad decor  
• Cathedral: Built in the 16th century on the site of a former mosque, the frequent attacks by Berber pirates explain its fortress-like look, creneled towers and fortified walls  
• Puerta de Purchena: This square is the nerve centre of the town, where most of the buildings date back to the 19th century  
• Parroquia de la Encarnación: This monumental building was erected in the 18th century on the request of the 10th marquis of the Vélez and has a fine baroque stone portal

• Día de la Vieja - in Vera people take a huge picnic feast to the countryside and spend the whole day there, at sunset a colourful paper doll, La Vieja, (the old one) is broken up to liberate the sweets within, certainly a big hit with kids of all ages; End of March. Mojácar - A special ambience pervades the noisy street parades, with their flamboyant costumes, as the age-old battle is re-enacted on sea and shore; You’ll be well entertained by mock battles, fireworks, markets, music and feasts of giant paellas; beginning of June. Roquetas de Mar - Huge bonfires are lit on the beach; everyone parties through the night until dawn; end of June. La Virgen del Mar - patron saint of Almería, is celebrated with a grand procession through the city streets with the Virgin’s statue pulled on a carriage decorated with flowers; July. Virgen of the Assumption - lasts for about three days and there are all sorts of activities including daytime competitions and in the evening live music and dancing through the night; end of August. 

Day trip

• 1_Cuevas de Sorbas: 50 Km. Have an adventure exploring a Cave. Different levels of difficulty. Guided tours are available and helmets and lights are provided.
• 2_Mini Hollywood: 30 km. Mini Hollywood is a small theme park in Almería built around an old spaghetti western film set where some legendary films were shot, including “For a Few Dollars More”. There is also a zoo with many exotic animals.
• 3_Diving in the Cabo de Gata: 30 Km. These diving areas contain diverse fauna and flora. The sea bed is home to many species of fish and over 500 species of invertebrates.

Group activities

• 1_Boat trips around the bay of Almería: Leave the port of Almería and enjoy a splendid panoramic view of the city, presided over by the silhouette of the Citadel (Alcazaba). From there, the boat takes you to the most dramatic point of Almería´s Coastline, Cabo de Gata.
• 2_Kayaking: Guided kayak tours are available in the natural park of Cabo de Gata. Self-emptying kayaks are used and the introductory tours are in calm water areas.
