The Winds of Modernism
The daring spirit of three architects, Santiago Calatrava, Frank O. Gehry and Norman Foster, turned Bilbao's destiny around. In a matter of years Bilbao went from being one of the best shipyards in Spain to being known as the city that harbours the peninsula's most avant-garde museum, the Guggenheim.
The Guggenheim Museum, designed by Frank O. Gehry, houses one of the world's largest private collections of modern and contemporary art. Its whimsical, titanium panelled shapes look futuristic even today. Other icons of Bilbao's contemporary architecture include the daring forms of the "La Paloma" International Airport, the work of Calatrava, and Foster’s ultra-modern Bilbao Metro.
However, Bilbao has much more to offer than just contemporary architecture. Its Historic Quarter preserves ancient structures, including the Santiago Cathedral and the Church of San Antón. In keeping with the city's hundred-year-old tradition as a centre of commerce, you will find every imaginable kind of shop along the streets of the Old Quarter, while Bilbao City Centre boasts succulent gastronomic offerings, ranging from traditional taverns to sophisticated signature restaurants, where you can discover the inviting personality of Basque cuisine. Cultural Bilbao
Both the Arriaga Theatre and the Euskalduna Palace of Congresses and Music offer outstanding artistic programming, for that perfect evening out. Alternatively, your night on the town can begin along the tidal inlet and end up in one of the city's numerous tapas bars. Either way, you’re bound to have a great time.
NH invites you to its five fantastic hotels in Bilbao, located in front of the Guggenheim Museum and the Euskalduna Palace of Congresses and Music, as well as in the neighbouring Leioa area.
