The City of Treasures
Have your camera ready when you explore this, one of Spain's most monument-filled cities. The Roman Bridge, built in 1 A.D., is a great place to start any tour. By day, its structure is graced by beautiful birds, as it crosses the Sotos de la Albolafia Natural Reserve. At night, its sixteen arches illuminate the Guadalquivir River with theatrical drama.
However, when it comes to magical settings, the Great Mosque is Cordoba's most treasured edifice. Its lush "forest of columns" is the result of a brilliant architectural trompe l'oeil and remains breathtaking to this day. The Mosque's Patio de los Naranjos (Orange Tree Courtyard) presents a metaphor for paradise as seen through Islamic eyes, with the melodious water of its fountains, the scents and flavours of its timeless orange grove and the aesthetic pleasure elicited by its perfect forms.
Not far from Cordoba city centre, visitors will discover another treasure: the Jewish Quarter. Its maze of old, narrow streets provides a peaceful haven, with its rows of whitewashed houses and colourful, flower-filled balconies. Take the time to enjoy some of the local courtyards, which form such an essential part of the city's culture and architecture that one of the most important celebrations is the Fiesta de los Patios Cordobeses (Festival of Cordovan Courtyards). Cosmopolitan Cordoba
Cordoba offers an ample selection of restaurants, pubs, shops and nightclubs. The San Carlos Fairgrounds and the Palace of Congresses and Expositions are the main headquarters for the numerous international festivals hosted by the city.
