Historic monuments in Madrid

The Royal Palace - Interesting in its own right, in particular its architecture, The Royal Palace is the official residence of the King of Spain in the city of Madrid and is the biggest palace in Europe with an area of 135000 m2.
Puerta de Alcalá - One of the most important monuments in Madrid, built by King Carlos III and designed by architect Francesco Sabatini. It is situated in the "Plaza de la Independencia", at the intersection of Alcala, Alfonso XII, Serrano and Salustiano Olózaga amd just outside the main entrance of Retiro Park.
Puerta Del Sol - The Puerta del Sol which is Spanish for "Gate of the Sun" is one of the most well known and busiest places in Madrid. At the centre of everything Puerta del Sol is home to the famous clock where people gather at midnight on New years Eve to count down into the new year
The bear and a madrone tree statue which is the heraldic symbol of Madrid, plus many bars reasturants and shops.
Plaza de Oriente - Juan Bautista Sachetti who designed the Royal Palace also had plans to build a big square in front of the Palace in the 18th century however these plans were not carried out until King Joseph I, Napoleon Bonaparte's brother, ruled Spain from 1808 to 1813. These carefully designed gardens are today a great place to relax and take in beautiful scenery.

1_Toledo: 70 Km. It is the most highly recommended trip because it has monuments from different periods of time and cultures. Do no miss the Cathedral and the church of Santo Tomé, with El Greco’s famous “Burial of the Count of Orgaz”.
2_Segovia: 90 Km. Located north of Madrid, very well known for its Roman Aqueduct of over two thousand years. The cathedral is an additional attraction. Nearby the 18th century royal Palace of La Granja with its lovely gardens.
3_El Escorial: 50 Km. Set in mountains surrounding Madrid. The Monastery is one of the greatest architectural works in the world. El Escorial was seen by Phillip II as a monastery, a palace and a royal pantheon where the Monarchs of Spain are buried.
4_Alcalá de Henares: 32 Km. Declared a World Heritage by UNESCO, founded by the Romans and is the cultural and humanistic capital of Spanish Renaissance. Miguel de Cervantes, author of “Don Quijote” was born in Alcalá in 1547.
5_Chinchón: 45Km. Of special interest for visitors to Chinchón is the Plaza Mayor, a picturesque square dominated by the local church. Traditional bullfights are still held in this square.
