The star attraction at the heart of Palma de Mallorca is the Cathedral of Saint Mary, a monumental building beside the sea, which has the second highest nave in Europe. Museums in Mallorca

Mallorca museum – displaying many collections and thousands of exhibits of prehistoric artefacts discovered during archaeological digs, as well as priceless Moorish ceramics, medieval and Baroque paintings, and pieces of ancient buildings that no longer exist today. Open April to September, Tuesday to Saturday from 10.00 to 14.00 and 17.00 to 20.00, and Sunday from 10.00 to 14.00, and October to March, Tuesday to Saturday from 10.00 to 13.00 and 16.00 to 18.00, and Sunday from 10.00 to 14.00.
Municipal museum of Pollenca - housed in a former Dominican monastery in Pollenca, the museum contains a large collection of sacred Gothic art, archaeological finds and a small collection of modern paintings. Open Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10.00 to 16.00

Exhibitions / Art galeries Mallorca

Museum of Contemporary Spanish Art - housed in an impressive Renaissance building which was remodelled in the early 20th century, most of the paintings and sculptures are by relatively unknown artists, but it does feature some works by Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro and Salvador Dali. Open Monday to Friday from 10.00 to 18.30 and Saturday from 10.00 to 13.30.

Cultural activities in Mallorca

Carnival – in February and March many fancy dress balls are held to mark the end of the Carnival before Lent. The most extravagant fiesta is held in Palma, known as the Cavalcade (Sa Rua).
Princess Sofia Trophy - this yachting regatta in Palma is one of the most important in the Balearic islands.
Dia de Virgen de Carmen – taking place on July 15th and 16th, feasts, blessing of fishing boats and parades are held all over Mallorca to celebrate the patron saint of sailors.

Historic monuments in Mallorca

Palau de l'Almudaina - this royal residence was built in Mallorca in the early 1300s, using the walls of an existing Arab fortress. The palace features some spectacular architecture, detailed, carved ceilings and there also a museum section. Guided tours are available.
Bellver Castle - located on a hill in Palma and close to the harbour, this stunning castle is one of the most spectacular Gothic castles in Europe, offering spectacular views of the bay, an inner courtyard, three tall towers, a moat and a museum, with many archaeological artefacts. Opening times vary.
Consolat de Mar - this elegant Renaissance building was built around 400 years ago featuring a splendid ceiling and is now the seat of the government of the Balearic Islands.
Other monuments: Valldemossa Monastery, Palau Episcopal and Museu Diocesa, Son Morroig, Casa Olesa.

Shopping in Mallorca

Shopping posibilities in Mallorca are plentiful, with choices from smaller independent shops and larger chain stores. Markets are the best place to buy fresh produce, as well as local gifts and souvenirs, and the food shops offer some of the best local foods e.g pastries at a reasonable price.

1_Mallorca Caves - Mallorca is well known for its caves which feature impressive underground lakes, enormous stalactites and stalagmites, and vast, cavernous spaces: There are over 200 caves in total however only a small amount of the island's caves are actually open to the public. Guided tours are available and the caves often feature steps and walkways.
2_Marineland – has the largest collection of sharks in the whole of Europe, a parrot circus, aquariums, dolphin and sea lion shows, crocodiles and a reptile zoo with large snakes:
