Día de la Patria Galega y Día del Apóstol Santiago - The last fortnight of july sees a mix of popular fiesta with the religious and the political, with the city council putting together an extensive cultural and entertainment programme including exhibitions, theatre, street entertainment, and a full range of concerts to suit all tastes, many of which are held in the Plaza del Obradoiro and Plaza de la Quintana. Ascensión - celebrations are riotous affairs, thanks in the main, to the students taking part in them; there are concerts, fairs, street bands, the livestock fair and of course, mass in the cathedral, during which the Botafumeiro makes another appearance; May or June (there is no fixed date). Semana Santa - very interesting processions such as the Procesión do encontro (The Meeting Procession), viernes santo (Easter Friday), and os caladiños (The Silent Ones). Las Romerías - normally feature fairs and dances too, the most popular ones in Santiago are San Lázaro, on March 17 and 18, and San Marcos and San Pedro Mártir, on April 24 and 29 respectively.

1_La Coruña: La Coruña is situated just 60 km away from Santiago de Compostela. It is a beatiful city which is almost all surrounded by the sea. Its most important monument is the Hercules tower, the only roman lighthouse that is still working and which is almost two thousand years old. During the past years La Coruña has become an important tourist and cultural centre thanks to its excellent network of museums such as the aquarium, the Museum of Mankind and the House of Science.
2_Vigo: Heading down south from Santiago, in one hour you will be in Vigo, the biggest city in Galicia and the one with the most important economic and commercial potential. Several monuments and places in the city as well as the beautiful surrounding areas and beaches make a visit to Vigo worthwhile.
3_Costa da Morte (Coast of Death): Between the villages of Malpica and Finisterre you will find the beautiful “Costa da Morte”, the Coast of Death. This name is due to the numerous ships that were wrecked all along this coast. This day trip is an opportunity to enjoy the wonderful nature of Galicia and to visit its typical fishing villages. The last one of them, Finisterre, is called like this because it was thought to be the end of the land, the finis - terrae.
