The traditions and customs of the Venice masquerade ball
Since it lasts 10 days, the carnival includes all kinds of events and different practices that are celebrated each year so the entire population can enjoy this extraordinary festivity. One of the most well-known traditions is the famous Flight of the Angel or, in its original language, "Volo dell’angelo." After the winner of the Festa delle Marie from the previous year is chosen, she is in charge of performing the great flight that begins the celebration.
The selected winner must fly on a metal cable from the bell tower of St. Mark’s Basilica to the center of the square. In earlier times, white clothing was used to represent the famous pure and holy Angel, but in recent years, this custom has changed to something more colorful and extravagant. However, the winner’s outfit always includes wings to represent the famous Angel.
As for the Festa delle Marie, its origin dates back to the 10th century when supposedly 10 of the most beautiful maidens of Venice were kidnapped by pirates on their wedding day. Fortunately, the city’s population came together and managed to rescue them, and from that day on, a yearly competition is held to decide who will be the Angel of the Flight, starting from the Festa delle Marie.
Twelve of the prettiest girls in Venice are selected to compete wearing the most extravagant and colorful dresses to earn the Angel’s place in St. Mark’s Square, one of the city’s oldest traditions and one of the most interesting to witness, fully connected to the great celebration of the Carnival of Venice.
The famous Venice Masquerade ball is truly stunning and are held throughout the Carnival’s entire duration in the city. These parties or masquerades are usually private, with very few being public. Most require reservations that can be made up to a year in advance due to how renowned they are.
If you don’t have the right invitation, you can still attend by paying a certain price, which can be up to 700 euros or less depending on who is organizing the Venice Masquerade ball. The most important feature and defining characteristic of these events is that clothing and masks are essential to participate in any of these masquerades, whether private or not. Organizers are very strict in ensuring that the outfits, both for men and women, are in perfect condition and serve as a proper tribute to the attire of the 18th century.
